Grow a Row with Herbalista Health Network

One of our favorite community groups in the Atlanta area is the Herbalista Free Clinic! In their own words, “Herbalista recognizes healthcare as a fundamental human right. We sponsor health services and herbal education through a variety of programs, empowering folks to care for themselves and their neighbors. We believe true healthcare is based on a foundation of mutual respect and mutual aid– solidarity not charity!” With the Herb Bus, they set up mobile healthcare units across town, serving people who otherwise have minimal access to healthcare. From foot care to herbal remedies, they consult and give free services and supplies to the underserved.

At Sustenance Design, we want our clients to be especially aware of The Grow a Row Program! They accept donations of medicinal plants used for the free health clinics. Many of our ecological landscape clients are growing medicinal plants in their meadows that are prolific. Annual harvesting of more vigorous plants can help the meadow thrive: mountain mint, bee balm or bergamot, yarrow, lemon balm, nettles, echinacea and more leaves or flowers can be harvested in late spring or summer. Plants with medicinal roots are typically harvested in late fall. Plants that Herbalista accept for their Grow a Row program are in the ‘Material Medica’ doc available at the Grow a Row website, linked above. Make sure you completely dry the herbs in air conditioning, out of direct sun, with extra fans on them. It’s harder for them to accept fresh herbs.

Become a monthly supporter of Herbalista and donate your extra plants to support this amazing organization!
